Practical insight

Practical thinking for safer organisations.

Guidance, ideas and updates from Create Safe, covering health, safety, wellbeing and training across the organisations we support.

Insights & updates

Useful guidance, without the jargon.

Our work takes us into a wide range of environments, including schools, universities, housing organisations and other workplaces. These first insights share practical ways to think about common health and safety questions.

01 · Schools & universities

Making health and safety work in education

Schools and universities bring together people, buildings, activities, contractors and changing levels of experience. A practical approach keeps responsibilities clear and makes good safety practice part of everyday work.

02 · Policy & systems

From policy to everyday practice

Policies and procedures provide structure, but they only make a difference when they are clear, accessible and connected to the work people do.

03 · Training

What makes health and safety training useful?

Good training should help people feel confident applying knowledge to their role, not simply complete a session and move on.

04 · Wellbeing

Wellbeing is part of a safer organisation

A healthy working environment includes how people are supported to do their jobs as well as the physical controls that help keep them safe.

Schools & universities

Making health and safety work in education

01

Education settings are varied and busy. The risks in a classroom, laboratory, workshop, sports facility or student accommodation will not be identical, so support needs to reflect the organisation and the work taking place.

Clear responsibilities, proportionate risk assessment and straightforward reporting arrangements help people know what is expected. Regular review then helps organisations learn from incidents, changes and feedback rather than allowing procedures to become paperwork.

Our work with schools and universities is grounded in practical advice that can be understood and used by staff, leaders and those responsible for particular activities.

Policy & systems

From policy to everyday practice

02

Useful systems start with a realistic understanding of how work happens. They define responsibilities, give people the information they need and make it easier to take the right action when circumstances change.

A practical review asks simple questions: what needs to happen, who needs to know, and how will we know it is working? The answers can then shape guidance, training, monitoring and review without adding unnecessary complexity.

Whether you are developing a new procedure or reviewing an existing management system, the aim should be the same: clear arrangements that support people to work safely and help the organisation learn.

Training

What makes health and safety training useful?

03

The most useful sessions are relevant to the people attending them. They make space for questions, use examples that feel familiar and connect the subject to the decisions people make in their working day.

That means matching content to the role, the organisation and the level of responsibility. It also means considering what happens after the session: how knowledge will be used, supported and revisited when needed.

Create Safe provides practical development across subjects including IOSH Managing Safely®, management training, incident investigation, risk assessment, first aid and fire safety.

Wellbeing

04

Good wellbeing conversations are built on trust, clarity and early action. Managers need to know how to listen, respond and signpost within their own policies and support arrangements.

Wellbeing also benefits from the same practical foundations as other areas of health and safety: clear responsibilities, thoughtful planning, open communication and regular review.

Every organisation is different. Understanding the work, the people and the pressures they face is the starting point for support that is proportionate, useful and workable.
